Lesson Three: Avoir, Ętre & Faire
In this lesson we will look at possible the 3 most important verbs there are to learn: Avoir, Ętre & Faire. Once you have mastered these, your understanding of the French language may become a little easier…
ÊTRE (to be)
I am = je suis
You are = tu es
He/she is = il/elle est
We are = nous sommes
You are = vous êtes
They are = ils/ells sont
AVOIR (to have)
I have = j'ai
you have = tu as
he/she has = il/elle a
we have = nous avons
you have = vous avez
they have = ils/ells ont
FAIRE(to do/make)
I make = Je fais
you make = tu fais
He/she makes = il/elle fait
you make = vous faites
they make = ils/ells font

e.g . Etre (to be) Je suis à Paris =
I am in Paris.
Avoir (to have) J'ai un livre = I have a book.
Faire (to do/make) Je fais mon lit = I'm making
my bed
Note 1: the pronoun Je becomes J'
because it is before a vowel.
Note 2: there are 2 different ways to say,
"you". "Tu" is used when you are
friendly with that person or that person is younger, "Vous"
is used in all other circumstances. A little more polite.
