Lesson Four: Plural & Plurals
What do you do in the French
language when you have more than one of something?
This lesson will teach you how to make French nouns (things)
plural...
When you make things plural (more than one)
then you add an "S" like in English, but unlike
English, you do not pronounce it.
e.g le pirate = les pirates (the pirate)
le lion = les lions (the lions)
la conversation = les conversations (the conversations)
le pique-nique = les pique-niques(the pic-nics)
Now, we need to remember how
to say "a", "the" & "some"
"A"
Un (masculine singular)
Une (feminine singular)
Des (masculine or feminine plural)
"THE"
Le (masculine singular)
La (feminine singular)
Les (masculine or feminine plural)
"SOME"
Des (masculine or feminine plural) -we don't have the
Les (masculine or feminine plural) equivalent of, "des"
in English
e.g. un chat = a cat~~~~
~~~~~~~~le chat = the cat
des chats = cats ~~~~~~~~~~~les
chats = the cats
You are pretty safe using
"S" most of the time but there are a few exceptions:
Nouns ending in "al":~~~~~~~~~
un journal (singular) ~~~~~~~~~des
journaux (plural)
Nouns ending in "aux":~~~~~~~
un gâteau (singular) ~~~~~~~~~des
gâteaux (plural)
There are more, this is just
the beginning, but I hope you understand the key concepts...happy
studying!
We hope you enjoyed your French lesson!
