Program The course is based on outcome based training. You will be based at our Bush Academy for 6 months andthen a further 6 months work experience at various lodges around the country. This gives them the vital experience that they need to further pursue a career in this rewarding and exciting industry. We believe that it is easier to learn about the bush, if you are living in it and involving yourself in it everyday. The course is both practical and academic, with students doing a practical activity (walk or drive) in the morning and afternoon, with 3 hours lectures after breakfast. The practical sessions are a re-enforcement of the academic that they will be learning in class. The first 6 months of the course is very academic and intensive and students write tests every Sunday. The course also covers the principles of lodge management and supervisory skills. With regards to the split between Field Guiding and Lodge Management, the course is 80% Field guiding and 20% Lodge Management. It is aimed at those who want to work as a Field Guide for a few years, with the view to managing a small lodge in the future. The course is not intended as a Lodge Management course but rather to give an overview for guides as to the workings of the lodge so that they are better equipped when they arrive for their work experience. Please note, there is a minimum governmental requirement to operate as a guide in this country, and therefore, only those students who pass the theoretical and practical components of the course, and achieve their FGASA Level 1 practical and theoretical qualification, will be placed at a lodge for the work experience component of the course. The FGASA (Field Guides Association of Southern Africa) and THETA (Tourism, Hospitality, Education and sports Training Authority) curriculum has been developed over a number of years by industry experts, with a focus on practical as well as theoretical training.
FGASA sets the
standards for Field Guides throughout Southern Africa in the form of a training
syllabus, very strict code of ethics, and an assessment system. Language Courses General English Group Courses 15 or 20 lessons per week Our most popular courses which range from Elementary to Advanced to Business English courses. Students can study in classes of small groups or choose to get private tuition. Teachers combine language skills in the morning with communicative skills in the afternoons. Private Lessons One-to-One courses These are individual lessons planned for the student's needs and can provide rapid improvement in their use of the English language. They can be combined with general classes and are a good way to focus on problems the student has in English. Combination Course (Group Lessons plus Private Lessons) These courses are designed to maximise the student’s time in the school. The courses are ideal for anyone who would like an intensive course with extra support in a certain area, for example professional people or university students with exams. Combination courses are a mix of group classes and private (one-to-one) 50-minute lessons. The group classes can be General English or a combination of General English, Exam Preparation (IELTS or Cambridge) or Business English. Exam Preparation Courses We prepare students for the whole range of Cambridge exam courses from FCE to CPE as well as the IELTS course. Shane Global Cape Town is also an exam centre for the London Chamber of Commerce and Industry (LCCI). They provide a qualification that is internationally recognised in most overseas countries. 25 lessons per week This course combines general English (20 lessons per week) and IELTS preparation (5 lessons per week). The programme gives the student the chance to improve their overall standard of English before focussing on the area most important to their learning Volunteer Programme The school also runs an extensive Volunteer Programme for students who wish to do some community work while they are here or even after their period of study. We can arrange for students to work in hospitals, hospices and non-governmental organisatins on a volunteer basis. These applications must normally be received well before the time as we have to make arrangements with these organisations. Further Study Shane Global Cape Town also provides a pathway for students who wish to do professional courses after studying English. Currently we are developing this area and we hope to provide many options in future. At the moment students can enrol for 3-month courses in aromatherapy, fashion design and sound engineering. Business English In today’s world English is the language of business communication. A good knowledge of English can be the key to a better job and improved career opportunities. At Shane Global we use a communicative method, teaching Business English through everyday business situations. These situations will include telephone English, giving presentations, meeting and socialising, negotiating, making travel arrangements, and business correspondence. Teen Activity / Adventure Programme The Youth Activity Programme is a course that is designed to allow teenage students to study in the mornings and to get out about Cape Town and the surrounding areas in the afternoons. The afternoon activities programme can be adapted to suit the specific requirements of the students.
