Cape Byron is located on the north coast of New South Wales, 800kms north of Sydney and 105K south of Surfers Paradise. The town is partly protected from the sea by Cape Byron, a rocky promontory 107m high and the continent's most easterly point. One of the most attractive and powerful lighthouses in Australia stands on the cape, beaming its light more than 40km out to sea. Good views of humpback whales on their migration up the coast to Hervey Bay can be seen from the Cape in July and on their return in September. There is lots to do at Bryon Bay other than just soak up the sun on the many beaches and eat magnificent seafood. The marine park at Julian Rocks, just off the main beach, is situated at the meeting place of tropical and temperate currents. Scuba divers will be dazzled by the amazing variety of fish and marine creatures to be seen. There are numerous rocky headlands providing perfect vantage points and ideal fishing platforms. Also, some local points and beaches are considered by surfers to be some of the best surfing beaches in the state. The town is famous for its laid back and alternative lifestyle resulting in an interesting mix of residents and is reflected in the galleries and boutiques and shops with New Age offerings. Events such as yoga retreats, pagan gatherings and music festivals, including the East Coast Blues & Roots Music Festival and Splendour in the Grass, are based in Byron Bay. The area is also noted for its wildlife, with the whale watching industry a significant contributor to the local economy. The numerous beaches, unspoilt rainforest vegetation and relaxed lifestyle, make Byron Bay a popular resort with both domestic and international tourists who travel down the East Coast Highway. |
